Friend's Mother's Memory Quilt

I have a friend that I have never actually met. We became friends online. She was so supportive when my mother passed a few years ago. Recently she lost hers and I offered to make a free quilt. I admire the family so much. She sent a box of clothing, told me the color her mother loved and I did the rest.

I had bought this flannel backing to make a quilt for my own mother before she passed. I was never given that opportunity. So it has sat. Its a beautiful Debbie Mumm print. It was the perfect fit for her quilt. Very garden like. I hope and pray it provides comfort in the coming months and years. There is nothing quite like a mama.

Mothers Memory Quilt and Matching Shams

Memory Quilts are so meaningful. Loss is difficult. It takes time to let go, move on with life without the person you love. This daughter had some of her mother's clothing items so we took those and made this precious quilt. 

This particular block was a sweatshirt with a zipper. I took the zipper out and stitched up the piece of fabric in order to keep all the cardinals intact. You could hardly tell.

We needed an extra block when she thought she only had 15 pieces of clothing, so I had this embroidery block made for her quilt. Its perfect. 

When she gathered all the clothing, she had two extra items so I combined them into blocks so that all pieces were represented in the quilt.

I also made three shams to match the quilt, two for her own daughters for free. She was another customer that was so supportive during this summer. She would write and check in on my husband, pray for us. Its awesome when customers become friends. She left wonderful feedback on my ETSY shop despite the delay in receiving her quilt.

Sometimes I have good intentions and not enough time.
Sometimes I try something new because a customer requests something special

That is the case with these pillows. My customer wanted to save a robe that her mom had worn. I used some of it in her memory quilt, which I had been doing a while, however I hadn't made many pillows that involved an envelope type back as well as clothing on the front. 

I think they turned out beautifully. I do want to purchase a pinking shear rotary blade as I think it might make it a little easier for edges not to fray on the inside. That would have been a great Pinterest tip.

Tackle It Tuesday - Late

Zekaryah got this shirt from a friend. When he was in the school play they put material on the back of it to hold his mic. I couldn't seem to remove it. He was pretty devastated.

I decided right then that it would be a great front for a pillow sham/case. I get requests all the time for them and it is an item I have added to my ETSY shop. Today I took the front and then some flannel for a quilt I made for my husband for our anniversary and made him a travel pillow for track. He loves to sleep on the bus, it helps him with not having seizures while he is away. He just needed something small so its only about 14 inches but he will love it.

I had made one out of my husbands shirt a while ago, just to see how I wanted to make them. My daughter has claimed it. She loves the feel of the shirt and loves the idea that she can have it as a pillow on her bed. I can see why these are so popular.

Caring or Memory Quilts

Sometimes customers need multiple quilts out of the same clothing

With this one I was able to make three quilts from what was sent

She picked the same blue fabrics for all three

The blocks were arranged in different positions

I put an equal amount of pockets like this one in the quilt in every other row.

Mother's Grandmother's Clothing

This quilt is gray with a black scroll binding and purple binding because purple was the grandmother's favorite color, I used purple binding on all three to tie them together

This is the other daughters quilt, she chose blue border fabric and brown flannel backing with the purple binding

This is the mothers quilt, the daughter to the grandmother. Her's I made as a surprise in brown fabric and brown flannel and purple binding. I love how different each of them are and there was so much excess clothing to return for other quilts later if they desire.

Graduation Quilt for a Friends Daughter

So many of our friends children graduate this year 

A friend of mine that does massages traded a massage as part of her portion of this quilt and then I paid for the materials

Broken Frog

My broken frog. It had a hidden message that year. My husband and I were separated and I had flown to Texas to get the kids so I could have them for Christmas. He had temporary custody and we were looking at divorce. That Christmas my mom got me a couple of items that had scripture on them. My husband and I were really trying to work things out. I think my mom knew that we just needed healing over his mother's death. It had taken a toll on me to care for her. The frog says All things grow with love. Without it I g-a-i-n nothing! 1 Corinthians 13  I will admit that it brought tears to my eyes and I knew she was telling me to move back home. I did 2 weeks later.Thus the tears tonight over this material thing that might not be able to be fixed since its hollow inside.
